Chapter Nine

Emma

My heart raced and a giddiness filled me. I knew Axe had to be concerned. He kept casting me glances, like he thought I’d lost my mind, or might fall apart at any moment. I didn’t know how to make him understand. He’d lived his entire life knowing things like shapeshifters, vampires, and such existed. I’d only read about those things, believing them to be made up. I’d read every fantasy romance I could get my hands on. Shifters, fae, witches, vampires… and even the ones about monsters.

Finding out some of my favorite creatures who’d provided an escape for my everyday life, and given me something to dream about, were real was beyond amazing. If the sheriff hadn’t shown me proof, I would have thought they were playing a trick on me. It felt like the greatest gift in the world. And Axe thought I was his fated mate? It all seemed too good to be true.

Magic was real! I wondered if Josh had known. He couldn’t have been descended from a dhampir without realizing he was different, could he? Why hadn’t he said anything all these years?

Of course, the vampires in the books never acted like him. Even the darker, edgier ones eventually fell for the heroine. Sure, it was often an obsessive type of love, but they wouldn’t have beat the hell out of her like Josh did to me. I looked at my surroundings through new eyes. Every person who passed, I wondered what they were.

“You’re quiet,” Axe said as he eased me onto the truck seat and helped me buckle.

“Still processing,” I said, smiling so widely it nearly hurt. “I can’t believe it. You have no idea how amazing this is!”

“Shouldn’t you be in denial? Calling us liars? Or freaking the hell out and wanting nothing to do with me?” he asked.

“Why would I do that?” I asked. He stared at me, seeming to be unable to comprehend why the news would excite me. Maybe I needed to put things into perspective for him. “You said we’re fated mates. That means it’s forever, right?”

“Of course. Although, until I met you, I thought the fated mate thing was just a myth. We have stories about them. I’ve just never met anyone who had found theirs.”

“You won’t cheat on me, right?” I asked.

Horror crossed his features, and he backed up a step. “Why would you even ask that? Do you have any idea…”

I held up a hand. “Unless the books I’ve read are based on the truth, then no, I really don’t have any idea. But if us being mates mean we’re together for life, and you won’t cheat, and I clearly know you aren’t going to beat me since you saved me from Josh… why exactly would I be upset over all this?”

He opened and shut his mouth and decided to remain silent. He’d worried I wouldn’t accept who he was. I couldn’t blame him. But it seemed me being joyful over the news had short-circuited his brain.
